Growing & Care
Dahlias are rewarding and surprisingly easy to grow once you know a few basics.
Planting: Wait until after your last frost date and soil has warmed to at least 60°F — here in New England that's typically mid-May. Plant tubers 4–6 inches deep with the eye facing up, spacing them 18–24 inches apart. No need to water until you see sprouts emerging.
Sun & soil: Dahlias love full sun — aim for at least 6–8 hours a day. They prefer well-draining soil enriched with compost. Avoid low spots where water tends to pool.
Pinching: When your plant reaches about 12 inches tall, pinch out the center growing tip just above a set of leaves. This encourages bushy growth and far more blooms.
Watering: Once plants are established, water deeply 2–3 times per week. Consistent moisture is key — dahlias don't love drought or soggy feet.
Staking: Dinner-plate varieties like Café au Lait and Kelvin Floodlight will need staking. Set your stake at planting time to avoid damaging the tuber later.
End of season: After the first frost blackens the foliage, cut stems down to about 4 inches and carefully dig your tubers. Allow them to dry for a few days, then store in a cool, dry, frost-free spot over winter in peat moss or vermiculite.

When will mine ship? Orders are fulfilled based on your location and current weather conditions. You'll receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking as soon as your tubers are on their way. If you order early, just sit tight — your tubers are being stored carefully until it's the right time to send them.
How we pack them: Each tuber is hand-inspected, labeled by variety, and packed with care to arrive healthy and ready to plant. We use breathable packaging materials to keep tubers in great condition during transit.
